What is a Safe Zone?

A safe zone or a safe space is a place where all people can bring their authentic selves and feel safe, welcome, and included.

 It may be a classroom, an organization, or a business, etc. Creating safe zones or safe spaces is a proactive step that schools, agencies, and corporations can take to create welcoming, inclusive spaces so that all people are empowered to reach their full potential. 

These programs aim to increase the awareness, knowledge, and skills for individuals and address the challenges that exist when one wants to advocate for their LGBTQ+ peers, family members, friends, coworkers and for themselves. 

20% of LGBTQ+ employees report looking for another job specifically because their workplace environment isn’t accepting of LGBTQ+ individuals.

15% of transgender employees report being verbally harassed, physically attacked and/or sexually assaulted at work within the last year because of their gender identity or expression.

One on five trans people have been denied medical services due to their gender identity

40% of transgender people had attempted suicide compared to 4.6% of the general population

More than 50% of LGBTQ+ people experience some form of healthcare discrimination
